PHIPA Foundation Training

The South East LHIN Enabling Technologies team supports the region in building the knowledge and understanding of privacy and security. Implementing a robust privacy and security program can be complicated. The responsibilities of health information custodians outlined within the Personal Health Information Protection Act (PHIPA) are standard regardless of an organization’s size. The following resources will guide organizations in maturing their privacy and security programs. Additional privacy and security tools can be found on the website of the Information and Privacy Commissioner of Ontario.

Privacy training is vital for improving patient confidence in the health care system, as patients need assurance that their Personal Health Information (PHI) is kept confidential and is only used to provide patients with the best possible care. There are many clinicians, staff and volunteers who play a role in the “circle of care” and become privy to a patient’s PHI. Below is a self-directed training presentation that outlines the fundamental concepts of the Personal Health Information Protection Act (PHIPA).

The presentation is divided into sections describing:

  1. Privacy Concepts
  2. PHIPA Terminology
  3. Collection, Use and Disclosure of PHI
  4. Consent
  5. Privacy Breaches
  6. The Role of Privacy Officers
